Luxury Penthouse in Sohmer Piano Building Up for Sale for ₹211 Crore
Real Estate:A luxurious penthouse in New York City’s historic Sohmer Piano Building, located at 170 Fifth Avenue, has hit the market with a price tag of $25 million (₹211 crore). The five-bedroom, five-bathroom property is situated atop a 13-story Beaux-Arts building that was constructed in 1898, just four years before the iconic Flatiron Building was built nearby.

The Sohmer Piano Building, originally the home of the Sohmer Piano Company, played a significant role in bringing baby grand pianos to the market in the 1880s. Its most distinctive feature is the golden dome, which provides a 360-degree view of the city and has become a recognizable landmark in photos featuring the Flatiron Building.

The penthouse, listed by Sotheby’s, spans an impressive 5,777 square feet and includes an open kitchen with skylights, marble bathrooms, a private roof deck, and a grand spiral staircase. The cupola, a two-story octagonal space within the dome, is designed as a sitting area complete with a bar cart. This unique space offers a perfect spot for relaxation and entertainment.

Since the building's conversion to a condominium in 2001, the property has been owned by philanthropist Gregory C. Carr, who bought it for $7.5 million (approximately ₹63 crore in today’s exchange rate). Carr has extensively renovated the property and plans to use the proceeds from the sale to fund schools and preschools in Mozambique.

Sotheby’s agent, Lawrence Treglia, described the penthouse as a “true old New York piece of property.” He highlighted the iconic nature of the cupola, noting that it is always visible in photographs featuring the Flatiron Building. “There’s nothing of this kind in that price bracket,” Treglia told CNN. He also mentioned that the primary suite’s design and layout evoke the grandeur of the Plaza Hotel.

New York’s architectural legacy is rich and varied. While the Sohmer Piano Building may be less famous than its Flatiron neighbor, it is a slim, elegant structure measuring just 29 feet wide and 120 feet long. Designed by architect Robert Maynicke, the building has housed various businesses over the years before being transformed into luxury residences.

The penthouse offers a unique opportunity for buyers to own a piece of New York’s architectural history, blending old-world charm with modern luxury. With its golden dome and rich history, it stands as a testament to the city’s enduring appeal and architectural significance.
