The Pallikaranai marshland is a critical freshwater and partly saline wetland in Chennai, India, declared a Ramsar site in April 2022 for its ecological significance.
The construction project is controversial because it allegedly violates the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules 2017, which prohibit developmental activities within Ramsar-notified wetlands or their one-kilometre zone of influence.
