Maharashtra Advances with Greenfield Airports in Vadhavan and Virar
The Maharashtra government has directed officials to fast-track plans for new greenfield airports in the Vadhavan and Virar regions of Palghar district. This strategic move is designed to bolster multimodal connectivity, aligning with major economic drivers such as the planned Vadhavan Port and emerging urban corridors. The directive, issued at a recent board meeting of the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), positions air infrastructure as a critical catalyst for regional growth, logistics integration, and balanced development across the state.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the need for timely land identification and expedited planning for these new airports. He underscored that coastal and peripheral regions would benefit from enhanced transport links that extend beyond traditional roads and rail. The Vadhavan area, envisioned as one of Asia’s largest port complexes, is expected to generate significant cargo and passenger flows, heightening the demand for air connectivity that integrates with existing road, rail, and ferry networks.
The proposed airports in Vadhavan and Virar are part of a broader push by the state to modernize aviation infrastructure and support future economic clusters. In the Vadhavan coastal belt, projections anticipate a multimodal transport hub that could handle large cargo volumes and passenger movement, offering alternatives to congested gateways in Mumbai and Pune. Integrated infrastructure can also attract investment in sectors from tourism to manufacturing—sectors that hinge on both timely logistics and accessibility.
Strategic planning for these airports will consider environmental and land-use impacts carefully, given the ecological sensitivity of the coastal region. The Virar region, part of the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), is already experiencing rapid urbanization and infrastructure investment, including mass transit expansions and road improvements. For residents and industries in the northern MMR, localized air connectivity may reduce dependence on central city airports, easing congestion and diversifying access points in one of India’s most dynamic urban agglomerations.
MADC’s board also reviewed progress on expanding and modernizing existing airports across the state, including upgrades at Nanded, Sindhudurg, and Nagpur, and broader plans for infrastructure financing. Strengthening aviation infrastructure is viewed as key to attracting investment, generating employment, and supporting Maharashtra’s aspiration to be a national hub for trade and commerce. The greenfield airport initiative comes at a time when aviation demand in Maharashtra’s established airports continues to grow—Pune Airport recently crossed over 10 million domestic passengers in 2025, underlining the need for expanded capacity and diversified gateways.
