Middle East Crisis Disrupts Mumbai and Delhi International Flights
The ongoing tensions in the Middle East have significantly disrupted air travel in India. On Sunday, a total of 225 international flights were cancelled at Mumbai and Delhi airports following US and Israel attacks on Iran and the subsequent closure of Gulf airspaces.
At Mumbai Airport, 125 flights were cancelled, comprising 67 departures and 58 arrivals, according to sources. Delhi Airport saw at least 100 cancellations, with 60 departures and 40 arrivals affected.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates Indira Gandhi International Airport, issued a warning to passengers that west-bound international flights may face schedule changes due to the evolving political situation. The airport authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are coordinating with airlines to manage passenger traffic.
Mumbai International Airport Ltd had earlier issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) restricting the acceptance of diversion flights from 9 p.m. on Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday. This decision was prompted by limited parking space, which forced several flights to return to their origin or divert to nearby airports.
The Civil Aviation Ministry estimated that domestic carriers would cancel 444 international flights on Sunday due to the closure of Gulf airspaces. Passengers traveling internationally from Mumbai and Delhi were advised to check flight schedules before heading to the airports to avoid unnecessary travel and inconvenience.
Airlines and airport authorities are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating to manage passenger traffic, though disruptions are expected to continue until the airspace situation stabilizes. Passengers are urged to stay updated via official airport announcements and airline notifications as the geopolitical developments in the Middle East continue to affect international travel.
The Indian aviation industry is facing significant challenges due to the ongoing crisis. The closure of airspace in the Gulf region has led to increased operational costs for airlines, as they are forced to reroute flights to longer and more expensive routes. This, in turn, may lead to higher ticket prices and further disruptions for passengers.
Despite these challenges, the aviation authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and convenience of passengers. Regular updates are being provided to keep the public informed about the latest developments and any changes in flight schedules.
In the meantime, travelers are advised to remain patient and flexible, as the situation remains fluid and subject to change. The government and aviation industry are committed to minimizing the impact on passengers and restoring normal operations as soon as possible.
