Maharashtra is expected to witness above-normal rainfall in October due to the delayed withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. Fresh weather systems developing over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea will likely trigger intermittent heavy rainfall, particularly in Konkan, western Maharashtra, and Vidarbha.
The monsoon withdrawal is delayed in Maharashtra due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is restricting the typical retreat of southwest monsoon currents.
Temperature trends indicate that maximum temperatures may remain below normal in most regions, while minimum temperatures could be normal to slightly above average.
Maharashtra recorded 153 extreme weather events during the 2025 monsoon, including 135 cases of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, 18 lightning and thunderstorm events, and scattered flash floods.
Above-normal rainfall offers opportunities for replenishing water reserves but also poses challenges in managing urban infrastructure, transport, and agriculture sustainably. Urban flooding, swollen rivers, and crop damage are some of the risks that need proactive planning and management.
