Maharashtra Government Launches Statewide Investigation into Illegal College Fees
Pune, 28th April 2026: The Maharashtra Higher Education Minister, Chandrakant Patil, has issued a directive for a detailed investigation into alleged illegal fee collection by colleges throughout the state. This decision comes on the heels of a probe conducted at the behest of the Bombay High Court, which uncovered significant irregularities at ILS Law College in Pune.
The inquiry revealed that the Pune-based college had charged students various fees without the necessary approvals. These charges were levied under different heads without the required permission from Savitribai Phule Pune University, thereby violating established rules and regulations.
As a result of the findings, the minister has instructed the college to refund the excess amount collected from students, including an interest rate of 6%. In one specific case, over ₹1 lakh was reportedly charged under multiple unauthorized fee components. Taking the matter further, the state government has now decided to expand the probe to other educational institutions across Maharashtra.
