Maharashtra Government to Revamp Artificial Sand Policy This Week
Real Estate Maharashtra:Nagpur: The Maharashtra government is set to amend its Artificial Sand (M-Sand) Policy this week, with the changes focusing on the use of crusher machines. The move aims to reduce the state's reliance on natural river sand, ensure a steady supply for construction projects, and curb illegal sand mining.

Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the Revenue Minister, stated, “We have already given directives permitting around 50 crushers in each district to manufacture artificial sand. Companies that manufacture these crushers have provided some suggestions, which we have taken into consideration. In the next few days, we will come out with a revised policy regarding this.”

The existing policy, approved earlier by the state cabinet, already provided a framework for promoting M-Sand by encouraging private participation through crusher units and offering royalty concessions. The government reduced the royalty on M-Sand to Rs 200 per brass, compared to Rs 600 for natural sand, to make it a more attractive option for builders.

Bawankule added, “In one or two years, Maharashtra will be using artificial sand on a large scale. We won’t be dependent on river sand anymore. This will ensure that environmental concerns are taken care of.”

Experts have welcomed the government's focus on manufactured sand but have cautioned that large-scale stone crushing could have environmental implications if not regulated properly. They have urged that adequate safeguards, site inspections, and buffer zones be mandated before permissions are granted.

The shift to artificial sand is expected to have significant benefits, including the protection of river ecosystems and the reduction of illegal sand mining, which has been a long-standing issue in the state. However, the government must ensure that the new policy is implemented with strict environmental regulations to prevent any adverse impacts.
