The Maharashtra Government has launched a detailed conservation plan to protect and restore 500 temples, 60 forts, and 1,800 stepwells across the state, aiming to boost tourism and public awareness of the region's rich cultural heritage.

The main goal is to preserve and restore 500 temples, 60 forts, and 1,800 stepwells across the state, while also boosting tourism and promoting public awareness of Maharashtra’s cultural and architectural heritage.
The Archaeology Department is acting as the nodal agency for this project, in collaboration with 'Maitree'.
350 non-protected forts will also be included in the conservation plan.
DMOs will be established in Pune, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, and Nashik to promote cultural heritage and tourism. They will prepare integrated plans for the preservation, maintenance, and tourism development of heritage sites in each district.
The first phase of implementation is expected to begin by March 2026, covering 15 heritage destinations.
