The shipment, which includes the remaining components of the first TBM and the full set of parts required to assemble the second TBM, left China in early March and reached Chennai port. It was then dispatched for Mumbai on March 18, indicating that logistical bottlenecks have now been resolved, and the movement of critical equipment is back on track.

As per project plans, a total of three TBMs are to be deployed for the Mumbai section, highlighting the massive scale of underground engineering involved. The current arrival marks the first major step toward full deployment. The TBMs will be launched from key points including BKC, Vikhroli, and Sawli. The underground alignment was chosen due to severe land acquisition constraints in Mumbai and the presence of existing and planned elevated metro corridors and bridges.

The TBMs are equipped with a mixshield configuration, a sophisticated tunnelling technology designed to handle complex geological conditions, including soft soil, rock layers, and high-pressure underwater environments. This advanced technology is crucial for the successful execution of the subsea stretch, which involves tunnelling at depths of up to 114 metres.

Although the TBMs were procured from the German firm Herrenknecht, they were manufactured in Guangzhou, China. The machines had remained stranded at a Chinese port due to clearance issues, prompting diplomatic intervention involving the railways and external affairs ministries. The matter was also raised during high-level talks, ensuring that the project could proceed without further delays.

The underground package, executed by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, is one of the most complex components of India’s first high-speed rail corridor, designed for speeds up to 320 kmph. The successful deployment of the TBMs is expected to accelerate the project, bringing the vision of a high-speed rail network in India closer to reality.
