The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is the civic body responsible for the administration and governance of Mira Bhayandar, a twin-city located in Maharashtra, India. It is tasked with maintaining public health, sanitation, urban planning, and other municipal services.
The MBMC has seized over 4,500 kilograms of banned single-use plastic and collected fines amounting to over Rs 24 lakh from 481 vendors in the past six months. They have also formed special squads to enforce the ban and impose fines on violators.
The penalty for violating the single-use plastic ban includes fines of Rs 5,000 for the first offense, Rs 10,000 for the second, and Rs 25,000 for the third. Repeated violations can also result in imprisonment of up to three months.
The single-use plastic ban includes a wide range of products such as cutlery, straws, containers, and other disposable plastic items.
The MBMC has formed special squads led by zonal sanitary inspectors to enforce the plastic ban. These squads are empowered to swoop down on erring establishments, seize banned material, and impose fines on violators.
