Mira-Bhayandar: 26-Year-Old Woman with Catastrophic APLA Syndrome Delivers Healthy Preterm Baby
Real Estate Maharashtra:In a remarkable medical feat, a 26-year-old woman with extremely low hemoglobin levels and catastrophic antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APLA) syndrome delivered a healthy preterm baby at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.
The multidisciplinary team, led by consultant obstetrician and laparoscopic surgeon Dr.
Rajashri Bhasale, nephrologist Dr.
Puneet Bhuwania, and hematologist Dr.
Muralidharan C, played a crucial role in this successful delivery.

When the patient was admitted, her hemoglobin level had dropped to a critical 2 g/dL, and she was suffering from severe anemia, pulmonary edema, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
These conditions posed severe risks to both the mother and the unborn baby.
The medical team immediately initiated an emergency cesarean section (LSCS) after stabilizing the patient through plasmapheresis therapy, multiple blood transfusions, and steroid treatments to improve the baby’s lung maturity.

Dr.
Rajashri Bhasale, the lead obstetrician, described the case as one of the most challenging and unique they had encountered.
'The patient arrived with severe anemia and multiple complications, including pulmonary edema and DIC.
Her hemoglobin was critically low, and the baby’s health was deteriorating.
After extensive blood product transfusions, we were able to stabilize her enough for surgery.
The 1.2 kg baby was delivered without signs of abruption,' Dr.
Bhasale explained.

The rare and severe condition, catastrophic APLA syndrome, affects approximately one in 2 to 5 lakh individuals.
It causes the body to destroy hemoglobin, leading to life-threatening complications.
Plasmapheresis therapy, a type of dialysis procedure that removes harmful proteins from the blood, was crucial in managing the patient’s condition.

'The collective effort of our team and timely intervention saved both the mother and the baby.
We are grateful to have been able to stabilize her and deliver a healthy baby despite the odds,' added Dr.
Bhasale.

The patient, who resides in Palghar, expressed her gratitude to the medical team.
'I was so weak when I was admitted, and I thought I might not survive.
But the team at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, didn’t give up on me.
They explained everything clearly and treated me with care and compassion.
My baby and I are alive today because of them, and we are forever grateful,' she said.

Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, is known for its advanced medical facilities and dedicated medical teams.
