The maximum permissible noise level for individual firecrackers is 125 dB(AI) Leq at four meters, according to the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, and CPCB norms.
Sound intensity drops by roughly 6 dB with each doubling of distance. This means that if a noise level is measured at 8.2 meters, it could be 6–8 dB higher at four meters.
Firecrackers like Myna Silver 500 Lad, Anil Dynamate Bomb Green, and Anil Flower Rocket were found to potentially exceed the legal noise limits when adjusted to the standard testing distance of four meters.
MPCB will monitor noise levels at 11 sites in Pune, including Shivajinagar, Karve Road, Swargate, Yerwada, Laxmi Road, and Savitribai Phule Pune University Road, and three locations in Pimpri-Chinchwad: Pimpri, Chinchwad, and Thergaon.
These tests are crucial for enforcing noise pollution regulations and raising public awareness about the harmful effects of excessive noise during Diwali. They help ensure that firecrackers used during the festival are within safe limits.
