The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a comprehensive plan to transform Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements, into a sustainable urban area. The project aims to provide housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunities while preserving the unique identity of the community.
The project is estimated to cost ₹95,790 crore, with construction having commenced on January 14, 2025. It is slated for completion by January 13, 2032.
The project is a joint venture between the Maharashtra government’s Slum Rehabilitation Authority and a private developer. The Chief Executive Officer of the project presented the comprehensive plan to senior officials.
Critics have raised concerns over incomplete surveys, lack of public consultation, and potential displacement of residents. They argue that the plan may favor developers at the cost of displacing thousands of people.
Despite the controversies, the government maintains that the project will be implemented through an environmentally sustainable and integrated approach, aiming to rebuild lives while preserving the core essence of Dharavi.
