Mumbai Constable Dies in Tragic Piling Rig Collapse at Flyover Site
A Mumbai Police constable, Santosh Gopal Chavan, lost his life in a tragic accident when a heavy piling rig collapsed at an under-construction flyover site on the Sion–Panvel Highway in Mankhurd. The incident occurred late at night when he was returning home on his motorcycle after completing his duty.
The constable, who was attached to Nehru Nagar police station and had also been serving on deputation at the eastern region control room, was traveling along the highway when the piling rig, used for deep foundation work, suddenly toppled and fell onto the road, directly hitting him and his motorcycle.
He suffered severe injuries in the impact and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared him dead during treatment. Officials noted that the machine was part of ongoing flyover construction work at the site, where heavy equipment had been installed for piling operations.
Preliminary investigation suggested that the piling rig may not have been properly stabilised. Authorities indicated that the ground beneath the equipment could have been uneven or weak, which may have caused the structure to lose balance and collapse. Initial findings also pointed towards possible negligence in how the machinery was installed and secured at the site.
Following the incident, the Mankhurd police registered a case against the contractor, the machine operator, and others associated with the project. The investigation is focusing on whether standard safety protocols were followed and if there was any lapse on the part of engineers or supervisors responsible for the work. Statements of workers present at the site are also being recorded to understand the sequence of events.
The collapse led to major traffic disruption on the Sion–Panvel Highway, especially in the Mankhurd and Chembur stretch. A large portion of the road was blocked due to the fallen equipment, slowing down vehicle movement for several hours. Authorities later brought in additional machinery to remove the rig and clear the road, after which traffic movement gradually returned to normal.
Such incidents have been reported in the city in recent months, particularly at large infrastructure project sites involving metro work and flyover construction. Past cases of crane or equipment collapse have raised repeated concerns about execution-level safety, even though guidelines are in place. The growing pace of infrastructure development has increased the presence of heavy machinery in busy urban areas, making strict supervision more important.
