The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a comprehensive plan to transform Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements, into a sustainable and inclusive urban hub. It involves the rehabilitation of local residents and artisans, as well as significant infrastructure improvements.
The project is estimated to cost ₹95,790 crore. Construction began on January 14, 2025, and is expected to be completed by January 13, 2032.
The plan includes the provision of housing for every eligible resident within Dharavi, ensuring that no one is left behind. The project also focuses on the rehabilitation of skilled artisans and small businesses to integrate them into the mainstream economy.
The redevelopment will feature a comprehensive street grid with roads spaced every 125 meters and widths between 9-12 meters. This design aims to improve mobility, walkability, and connectivity, promoting economic activity and seamlessly linking Dharavi with the rest of Mumbai.
Critics have raised concerns over incomplete surveys, lack of public consultation, and the potential for displacement. They argue that the plan may favor developers at the cost of displacing thousands, labeling it a real estate grab rather than genuine redevelopment.
