Mumbai Rains: 21 Lives Lost in Rain-Related Incidents Across Maharashtra
Heavy rains in Maharashtra have claimed the lives of 21 people in the last five days, starting from August 15. Nanded district alone accounted for seven of these fatalities, according to an official report released on Tuesday. Parts of the state, including the capital Mumbai and its adjoining districts, have been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past few days, especially the last two days.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This has led to widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and the closure of schools and colleges in areas like Panvel, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.
About 200 passengers were evacuated from a stranded Monorail in Mumbai, which was towed back to Wadala station. The technical snag that caused the Monorail to halt between two stations has been resolved, and rescue operations have been successfully completed.
Schools and colleges in Panvel, Thane, and Navi Mumbai will remain closed on August 20 due to severe rainfall alerts. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff, as the region remains on high alert for potential flooding and other rain-related incidents.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the flood situation with the disaster management department, emphasizing that the next 48 hours would be crucial for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. These areas are on high alert, with emergency services mobilized to handle any contingencies.
The heavy rainfall has also affected train services and flight operations, bringing Mumbai to a near standstill. Properties and crops have been damaged, and hundreds of people have been displaced to safer locations. The authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the affected communities.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the state government has deployed additional resources to manage the situation. Rescue and relief operations are underway, and citizens are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The government is also urging residents to stay informed through official channels for the latest updates and safety guidelines.
The impact of the heavy rains is not limited to the urban areas. Rural districts like Gadchiroli in Vidarbha and Nanded in Marathwada have also been severely affected. The focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents, with a particular emphasis on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with disabilities.
As the state continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the monsoon, the resilience and solidarity of the people of Maharashtra are being tested. The government and emergency services are working around the clock to mitigate the impact of the rains and provide timely assistance to those in need.
Stay tuned for the latest updates on the situation and follow the advice of local authorities to ensure your safety during this challenging period.
