The Candela P-12 ferries are high-speed electric ferries that use hydrofoil technology. They float above water using underwater wings, reducing drag and energy consumption. They are nearly silent, produce minimal wake, and are highly stable even in rough seas.
The ferries will significantly reduce travel time, improve quality of life for commuters, and reduce travel stress. They will also ease the pressure on the city’s overloaded road and rail systems, offering a fast and clean alternative.
The ferries will initially operate on routes connecting the Gateway of India to Alibaug and Elephanta Island. Plans are also being drawn up for a direct connection between Navi Mumbai International Airport and South Mumbai.
The electric ferries emit no pollutants, produce minimal wake, and are nearly silent, making them an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional diesel-powered boats. They align with India’s broader push for net-zero carbon emissions.
The Maharashtra government has voiced support for creating an extensive network of electric waterways connecting key commercial, residential, and transit hubs. They are expected to provide regulatory support and facilitate the integration of the ferry system into the city’s transport network.
