A Red Alert is the highest level of alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in specific areas.
Mumbai, Raigad, and Thane are under a Red Alert until Monday morning, while Palghar is under a Red Alert for two consecutive days — Sunday and Monday.
The heavy rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to move westward and intensify into a depression. A trough extends from this low-pressure area toward the south Maharashtra coast.
Mumbai has already surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 380 mm, with 445 mm recorded so far in September.
Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with the latest weather updates from the IMD. It is also recommended to keep emergency contacts handy and be prepared for potential disruptions.
