National Lok Adalat Resolves Over 7 Lakh Pre-Litigation Cases in Maharashtra
Real Estate Maharashtra:MUMBAI: The National Lok Adalat, held on Saturday in Maharashtra, achieved a significant milestone by settling over 7 lakh pre-litigation cases and more than 2 lakh post-litigation matters. The Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) reported this accomplishment, highlighting the efficiency and impact of the Lok Adalat system.

An amount of over Rs 30 crore was also collected from over 3 lakh unpaid traffic challans as part of a drive that started on August 12 and concluded on the day of the Lok Adalat. This initiative involved nearly 37 lakh vehicles with pending challans amounting to over Rs 1500 crore.

One of the notable success stories from the event was the resolution of a long-standing motor accident claim dispute from 2002. An insurance company handed over a Rs 14 crore cheque to the victim's family following an order from the Bombay High Court. This case underscores the effectiveness of the Lok Adalat in resolving complex and long-pending disputes.

The third National Lok Adalat, organized by MSLSA under the guidance of Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and the authority’s executive chairperson Justice Revati Mohite Dere, included a special drive that spanned over five days prior to the main event. During this period, almost 70,000 post-litigation disputes were resolved across all courts in the state. The event received a massive response from all over Maharashtra, as reported by an MSLSA release.

Ms. Azmi, the member secretary of MSLSA, and SA Deshpande, the MSLSA deputy secretary, conducted periodic reviews leading up to the Lok Adalat. Taluka legal services teams played a crucial role in addressing a wide range of disputes, including motor accident claim petitions, bank recovery claims, criminal compoundable offences, matrimonial disputes, dishonour of cheques cases, and matters related to electricity and telephone bills. The number of cases resolved demonstrates the effectiveness and reach of the Lok Adalat system.

Settlements under the Lok Adalat have statutory sanctity under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. The award in Lok Adalats has the same effect as a decree of a civil court, ensuring finality and binding effect on all parties. When a matter is settled in Lok Adalat, the parties are entitled to a refund of the entire court fees, making it a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional litigation.

The next National Lok Adalat is scheduled for December 13, 2025, promising to continue the tradition of resolving legal disputes in a timely and effective manner.

In summary, the third National Lok Adalat in Maharashtra settled 7,18,419 pre-litigation cases and 2,08,337 post-litigation cases, showcasing the system's effectiveness in reducing the legal backlog and providing swift justice to the public.
