Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Launches Intensive Property Tax Recovery Drive

Property tax continues to be the most significant revenue source for the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), enabling the civic body to provide essential services and infrastructure to residents of Navi Mumbai. Despite having one of the lowest property tax rates among major cities in India and across the state, the number of property tax defaulters in the city remains considerable.

To address the issue and ensure higher revenue collection before the close of the financial year, Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde convened a special review meeting with senior officials from the property tax department and ward offices responsible for tax collection.

The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, Deputy Commissioner (Property Tax) Dr Amol Palwe, assistant commissioners from various divisions, and officials involved in property tax recovery. During the meeting, the commissioner reviewed property tax collection performance across the corporation's eight ward offices and assigned each division specific recovery targets to be achieved before 31 March. Officials and staff have also been directed to focus more on field-level recovery efforts rather than administrative work within offices in order to accelerate collections.

The civic body has prepared a division-wise list of property owners with pending dues, arranged in descending order based on the amount of arrears. This list has been circulated among all ward offices to facilitate focused recovery action. The commissioner has instructed officials to take stringent measures against high-value defaulters and warned that strong enforcement steps, including property attachment and seizure, may be implemented where necessary.

In addition, the list of property tax defaulters will be published through various media platforms to raise awareness and encourage prompt payment. Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde has appealed to residents to fulfil their civic responsibility by paying their property tax dues on time and contributing towards the continued development of Navi Mumbai.

The NMMC's efforts to intensify property tax collection are crucial for maintaining and improving the city's infrastructure and services. Timely payment of property taxes ensures that the municipal corporation can continue to provide essential amenities such as clean water, sanitation, and public transportation, enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
