Real Estate Maharashtra:In a significant development, the Maharashtra government has appointed Manoj Saunik, the principal adviser to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, as the new chairman of the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA). Saunik, a former chief secretary of Maharashtra, will take over from veteran bureaucrat Ajoy Mehta, whose term is set to expire on September 20, 2023.

According to an order issued by the Maharashtra Housing Department, Saunik's appointment has been approved by the Chief Minister. The decision comes after a three-member high-level search committee, led by Justice Atul Chandurkar, shortlisted Saunik's name along with those of Nitin Kareer, former chief secretary of Maharashtra, and Rajiv Jalota, Mumbai Port Trust chairman.

Saunik, an IAS officer of the 1987 batch, had retired on December 31, 2022, after serving as the chief secretary of Maharashtra. After his retirement, he was appointed as the principal adviser to the Chief Minister. Interestingly, his wife, Sujaya Saunik, has recently become the first female chief secretary of Maharashtra.

With Saunik's appointment, MahaRERA will have a new leader at the helm for a tenure of around 4.3 years. As the chairman of MahaRERA, Saunik will be responsible for regulating the real estate sector in Maharashtra, ensuring transparency, and protecting the interests of homebuyers.
