Odisha Govt to Offer Affordable Houses in Bhubaneswar: Minister Mahapatra
Real Estate News:The Odisha government is planning to take up housing projects in Bhubaneswar to provide dwelling units at very affordable prices. This initiative, part of the ‘Greater Bhubaneswar and Better Bhubaneswar’ plan, aims to offer homes to people in the range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, a stark contrast to the current market rate of at least Rs 1 crore for a house in the state capital.

Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced this plan to the media. “We are planning to provide different categories of LIG (low income group) and MIG (middle income group) houses to people at very affordable prices. The H&UD department is working out a comprehensive plan in this regard,” Mahapatra said.

The growing population of Bhubaneswar is leading to a shortage of land and imposing a significant burden on the city's civic infrastructure. To address this, steps are being taken to expand the capital region through the implementation of town-planning schemes. The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) is working on expanding the city's periphery, which will allow people to buy houses at more affordable prices.

In addition to housing, the government is also focusing on decongesting traffic in the city. Proposals to construct overbridges at key junctions to reduce traffic congestion are under consideration. The minister added, “We will also run more city buses to improve the capital’s public transport system.”

Improving smart city infrastructure is another key focus area. “The smart city projects implemented earlier have not been as effective as hoped. We are working on enhancing these infrastructure projects to make them more effective and beneficial for the residents,” Mahapatra emphasized.

The H&UD department is also planning to address the issue of urban flooding. An action plan for desiltation and cleaning of Gangua nullah and Daya West Canal is being developed to increase their carrying capacity. A team led by H&UD secretary Usha Padhee conducted a field assessment to finalize the plan.

These initiatives are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents in Bhubaneswar, making it a more livable and sustainable city.
