The water supply is being disconnected because these housing societies have failed to activate their Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) despite receiving multiple notices from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
The Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR) mandate that residential complexes built on land exceeding 20,000 square meters or consuming over 20,000 liters of water per day must operate STPs to reuse and recycle water.
Out of 456 large housing societies in Pimpri-Chinchwad, 184 are non-compliant and have not activated their STPs.
Housing societies argue that operating an STP is costly, with maintenance costs estimated at around ₹40,000 per month. PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh stated that the responsibility to run STPs lies with the housing societies, and sufficient time has already been provided. He confirmed that water connections to non-compliant societies will be disconnected from 1st June.
