PMC Sets Monthly Targets for Property Tax Inspectors: Crackdown on Unauthorized Use
Pune, 11th July 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced a significant administrative push to boost revenue and curtail unauthorized property use. As part of this initiative, the PMC has decided to assign monthly performance targets to its Property Tax Department inspectors. The primary aim is to streamline tax collection, enforce compliance, and address the growing concerns over the misuse of properties in the city.
The new directive requires inspectors to identify and levy taxes on newly developed properties, document changes in property use, conduct inspections of commercialized spaces, and ensure the recovery of pending dues. This comprehensive approach is designed to ensure that all properties are taxed appropriately and that the civic body can maximize its revenue.
The decision follows a joint inspection in the Baner area conducted by Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B. P. and Deputy Commissioner Avinash Sakpal. During the inspection, officials discovered that several hotels and residential buildings were illegally using vacant spaces for commercial purposes, leading to a significant revenue loss for the civic body. “In cases where vacant or residential spaces are being used commercially, inspectors must impose revised taxes accordingly,” said Additional Commissioner Prithviraj. He added that surprise inspections will also be conducted to ensure that field officers are meeting their assigned goals.
To strengthen the department’s manpower, 70 new employees have recently been appointed and are expected to undergo training soon. This additional workforce will help in covering a broader area and ensuring that the new targets are met effectively. Officials also revealed that technological upgrades are on the horizon. “In the near future, artificial intelligence will be integrated into the property tax system to increase efficiency. The existing registration app will also be improved to assist both citizens and staff,” said a senior PMC official.
The PMC’s initiative is expected to not only boost revenue but also ensure that all properties are used in compliance with the regulations. This move is a significant step towards maintaining the integrity of property use and ensuring that the civic body can adequately fund essential services and infrastructure projects for the benefit of the residents of Pune.
