PMC Takes Strong Action Against Illegal Hawkers in Pune
Pune: The civic body cleared illegal hawkers from several stretches in the Deccan area late on Monday night and confiscated their belongings as part of a drive against unauthorised vendors operating outside the prescribed hours.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials said these vendors, including food stall operators, were not only operating without permits, but also encroaching upon footpaths. The trash dumped by them on footpaths rendered walkways nearly unusable for pedestrians. "The central team spearheaded this action. More such actions are on the horizon," said Prithviraj BP, additional commissioner, PMC. The civic administration has been conducting drives against illegal hawkers in Sinhagad Road, Satara Road, Deccan, FC Road, and JM Road, officials said.
Citizens have welcomed the drive. Many residents have complained about the nuisance caused by these unauthorised vendors, including litter, noise, and congestion. The PMC's actions aim to restore order and cleanliness in these areas, ensuring that public spaces are safe and accessible for all.
The crackdown is part of a broader initiative by the PMC to regulate street vending and improve urban management. The corporation has been working on implementing the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, which aims to balance the needs of vendors and the public. This act provides a framework for the formation of town vending committees, which are responsible for issuing vending certificates, designating vending zones, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
While the drive has been met with positive feedback from residents, some vendors have expressed concerns about their livelihoods. The PMC has assured that it will work towards providing alternative vending spaces and support for those affected by the crackdown. The corporation is also planning to conduct awareness campaigns to educate vendors about the importance of obtaining permits and adhering to regulations.
The initiative is expected to have a long-term positive impact on the city's urban landscape, making it more pleasant and hygienic for residents and visitors alike. The PMC's efforts to enforce regulations and improve public spaces are a step towards creating a more organized and livable environment in Pune.
