Post-Poll Alliances in Maharashtra: A New Political Chess Game
Real Estate Maharashtra:The political landscape in Maharashtra is heating up as the assembly elections loom closer. Key leaders from Ajit Pawar's NCP are hinting at significant shifts in alliances post-election. One such leader, Dilip Walse Patil, an NCP minister in Maharashtra, recently suggested that the pre-poll alliances may not hold after the November 20 elections.

Walse Patil emphasized that the number of seats won by individual parties will be more crucial than which alliance emerges victorious. 'Then the real calculations will begin. There is room for a lot of maths before the formation of the next government, as there are six parties,' he stated. This comment adds to the growing speculation that the political scenario could be very different once the votes are counted.

The Maharashtra assembly elections are a high-stakes battle between two major alliances. The ruling Mahayuti alliance comprises the BJP, Shiv Sena (led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde), and Ajit Pawar's NCP. On the other side is the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, which includes the Congress, Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP), and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT).

'Let's keep the question of which alliance wins aside. What is important is how many seats each party wins,' Walse Patil added, pointing to his own contest from Ambegaon constituency in Pune district, where he faces NCP (SP) candidate Devdatta Nikam.

NCP leader Nawab Malik has also voiced similar sentiments, suggesting that the political landscape is fluid and unpredictable. 'Nobody is an enemy forever. Nobody is a friend forever. Things are changing. We saw this in 2019,' he said, referring to the dramatic shift in alliances during the last election when Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) exited the NDA.

In an interview with India Today's Rajdeep Sardesai, Malik stated, 'Before the 2019 election, nobody had predicted what kind of government would come to power in Maharashtra. Anything can happen.' He also weighed in on the possibility of a hung assembly, which could see Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar playing a crucial role in government formation. 'It will be a tough election in Maharashtra. It’s a neck-and-neck fight, and nobody can say that without Ajit Pawar, there would be a government. Ajit Pawar will play a key role. He can dictate his conditions as well,' Malik said.

If the BJP and Shinde’s Sena fail to secure a majority on their own and Ajit Pawar’s NCP performs well, Pawar might push for a hard bargain, possibly even切换阵营. The BJP is contesting 148 seats, Shiv Sena 85, and NCP 55.

The Maharashtra assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with results set to be announced on November 23. As the election date approaches, the buzz around post-poll alliances is only intensifying, and the political chess game in Maharashtra is becoming more complex by the day.
