Prominent Real Estate Developer CJ Roy Dies Amidst Income Tax Raids in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: A prominent real estate developer died of a gunshot wound at his home on Friday, just as income tax authorities were carrying out coordinated searches on his business interests, police said.
CJ Roy, the 57-year-old chairman of the Confident Group, was found with a bullet injury at his residence in the Langford Town neighborhood of central Bengaluru, deputy commissioner of police (Central) Akshay Hakay said.
Roy was rushed to a local private hospital before being transferred to Narayana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police have not yet determined whether the shooting was a suicide or foul play.
At the time the shot was fired, officials from the Income Tax Department were conducting searches at multiple locations linked to the Confident Group, a real estate developer with operations in Bengaluru and several southern states, including Kerala. The company has been embroiled in long-standing tax disputes and appeals before the Karnataka High Court and Income Tax Appellate Tribunals.
Beyond his real estate empire, Roy was a flamboyant figure in the Malayalam film industry. A native of Kochi, he produced several films, including the 2012 action-thriller 'Casanovva,' starring the superstar Mohanlal. His company was also a primary sponsor of 'Bigg Boss Malayalam,' the regional version of the popular reality television franchise.
The Confident Group is one of the leading real estate firms in South India, known for its high-quality residential and commercial projects. The company's involvement in the film industry and reality TV has further enhanced its brand presence and influence in the region.
The sudden and tragic death of CJ Roy has sent shockwaves through the business and entertainment communities. His contributions to both the real estate and film industries will be remembered, and his passing is a significant loss.
