Pune Airport Gets Boost: IAF Approves 13 Acres for Runway Extension, 8 New Parking Bays Planned
Real Estate Pune:In a significant development for Pune, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has provided in-principle approval to acquire 13 more acres of land to extend the runway at Pune Airport. This approval is a major step towards enhancing the airport's capabilities and facilitating more international flights.

Currently, the runway at Pune Airport is 2,535 metres long (8,316 feet) and 45 metres wide. To meet the requirements for larger aircraft, an additional 500 metres of space is needed on the eastern side and 300 metres on the western side. This extension will increase the runway's total length to approximately 10,940 feet, or nearly 3,335 metres. If the runway reaches 11,000 feet, it will be capable of accommodating larger planes, enabling direct flights to destinations in Europe and North America.

The estimated cost for acquiring the additional land is around ₹160 crore. This investment is expected to significantly boost the airport's operational capacity and attract more international carriers to Pune.

In July, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted an Obstacles Limitation Surface (OLS) survey. This survey is crucial for identifying and mapping obstacles around the airport to ensure safe aircraft operations and regulatory compliance. The OLS survey helps in producing detailed maps of protected airspace, preventing interference with takeoff, landing, and manoeuvring. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, recently announced that the OLS report for the runway extension has received a positive response. \
