Bapu Komkar was suffering from end-stage liver disease and required an urgent transplant. In a selfless act of love, his wife Kamini chose to donate a part of her liver to save him. The surgery was conducted last Wednesday, but despite medical efforts, both husband and wife died after the operation.
According to the hospital, Bapu developed cardiogenic shock post-surgery and could not be revived. Kamini, who initially showed signs of recovery, later developed sudden hypotensive shock with multi-organ dysfunction on the sixth postoperative day, which proved fatal.
In an official statement, Sahyadri Hospitals said, “With a heavy heart, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Liver transplant is one of the most complex procedures, and the recipient was a high-risk patient. The family had been counselled about the risks in advance. Despite following standard medical protocols and providing advanced treatment, the patients could not be saved.”
The double tragedy has left the Komkar family and their community in grief. Relatives and neighbours expressed shock over the incident, especially as Kamini’s sacrifice to save her husband ended in both losing their lives.
