Pune Court Sentences Two Men to 15-Day Jail for Drunk Driving
Real Estate Pune:Pune: The city's motor vehicle court has taken a firm stance against drunk driving by sentencing two men to 15-day simple imprisonment and imposing fines. The court found both men guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol, a serious offense that poses a significant risk to public safety.

According to the city traffic police, a 29-year-old man from Sinhagad Road was apprehended for drunk driving in October 2024. Another 29-year-old man from Pimple Gurav was caught driving in an inebriated condition in February this year on Ganeshkhind Road. Both individuals were prosecuted under sections 184 (driving dangerously) and 185 (driving by a drunk person) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Inspector Runal Mulla of the city traffic police and the public prosecutor pursued the two cases in court, resulting in the duo being sent to jail for 15 days. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the man from Sinhagad Road and Rs 12,000 on the other convict from Pimple Gurav.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav emphasized the ongoing efforts to combat drunk driving. 'We are following up many other cases of drunk driving in the court. We will continue to file more such cases and try our best to take these cases to a logical conclusion,' he stated.

The city has seen a significant number of drunk driving cases this year. As of now, 3,948 such cases have been recorded. Last year, a total of 5,293 cases were reported, while in 2023, only 562 cases were recorded. The numbers were even lower in 2022 and 2021, with just 37 and 69 cases, respectively.

These figures highlight the growing concern over drunk driving in Pune and the need for stringent measures to deter such behavior. The city traffic police are committed to maintaining road safety and ensuring that all drivers adhere to the law, protecting the lives of the public.
