Pune's 75-km Cycle Track Plan: A Test Beyond Construction

By GeoSquare News Desk · Published 2026-10-21

Pune is set to relaunch its cycle track network with an ambitious 75-kilometre plan, aiming to promote sustainable urban mobility. However, the real challenge lies not in laying asphalt but in ensuring the tracks are usable, safe, and well-integrated with the city's existing infrastructure.

Why Earlier Cycle Tracks Failed

Previous attempts at dedicated cycle lanes in Pune struggled with poor maintenance, encroachment by parked vehicles, and a lack of connectivity to key destinations. These issues turned many stretches into unusable strips, eroding public trust in the initiative.

Infrastructure Beyond the Track

For the new network to succeed, the Pune Municipal Corporation must address design flaws, enforce no-parking rules, and create seamless links with bus stops and metro stations. Without these supporting measures, the cycle tracks risk becoming another underutilised urban asset.

Impact on Real Estate and Property Buyers

Well-executed cycling infrastructure can enhance the appeal of nearby residential projects, especially for young professionals and eco-conscious buyers. Properties along functional cycle tracks may see increased demand and better resale value. Conversely, poorly planned tracks could become a liability, deterring buyers who value cleanliness and order.

For investors, the key is to monitor not just the announcement of such projects but their actual implementation and maintenance. A cycle track that is safe, shaded, and connected can be a strong selling point, while one that is neglected may signal broader civic management issues.
