Pune's Proposed Fire Safety Fee Could Hit Large Societies

By GeoSquare News Desk · Published 2026-11-06

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is considering a new fire safety fee targeting large residential societies and key commercial establishments. The proposal aims to generate an estimated Rs 15-20 crore annually to strengthen fire-fighting infrastructure and emergency response across the city.

Who Will Be Affected?

Under the draft plan, buildings above a certain height or with large floor areas—typically high-rise societies and commercial complexes—would be required to pay the fee. This could translate into additional annual costs for residents and business owners, potentially passed on through maintenance charges or property taxes.

Impact on Real Estate

For property buyers and investors, this fee may slightly increase the total cost of ownership in Pune's premium residential and commercial segments. However, improved fire safety infrastructure could enhance property values and insurance terms in the long run. Developers might also factor this into project pricing for new launches.

The PMC is expected to finalise the fee structure after public consultation. Stakeholders, including housing societies and real estate associations, have sought clarity on calculation methods—whether based on built-up area, number of floors, or risk category.
