The man-eater leopard was responsible for the deaths of three people in Pimparkhed village and nearby areas over 20 days. After obtaining clearance from Pune Conservator Ashish Thackeray, the Forest Department and a rescue team conducted a joint operation to neutralise the animal. A misfired tranquilliser dart led to the leopard charging at the team, prompting the use of lethal force.
The victims of the leopard attacks were a 5-year-old girl, an 82-year-old woman, and a 13-year-old boy. These attacks occurred in separate incidents since October 12, 2023.
The Forest Department is planning to conduct workshops and awareness drives in the affected areas to educate residents about coexisting with wildlife and taking safety measures. They are also working on better management of human settlements near leopard habitats to prevent such conflicts.
The Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre is where the leopard's carcass was sent for a post-mortem examination. The centre plays a crucial role in the management and conservation of leopards in the region.
The local community has expressed relief following the neutralisation of the man-eater leopard. However, some animal rights activists have raised concerns about the use of lethal force and have called for the prioritization of non-lethal methods to protect both human and animal lives.
