Pune Metro Expands with Six-Coach Trains Ahead of Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Line Launch
Pune, 29th May 2026: Pune Metro is preparing to introduce six-coach trains on its operational corridors connecting PCMC-Swargate and Vanaz-Ramwadi, anticipating a sharp rise in passenger traffic once the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro route becomes functional in the coming months.
Currently, Metro services on Line 1 and Line 2 operate with three-coach trains. However, officials expect daily ridership to increase by nearly 50 per cent after the launch of the 23-km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor, which will link the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park with the city centre and provide interchange connectivity with the existing Metro network.
The combined average daily ridership on the two operational corridors touched 1.87 lakh in March 2026. According to Shravan Hardikar, passenger numbers are projected to rise to nearly 2.75 lakh to 3 lakh commuters per day after the new line opens.
To handle the increased load, Pune Metro will begin procurement of six-coach trains, Hardikar said, adding that the long-term target is to build capacity for around six lakh passengers daily.
At present, Pune Metro operates 18 three-coach trains on the Vanaz-Ramwadi east-west corridor and 16 trains on the PCMC-Swargate north-south route. Officials said additional trains will also be required on both corridors to accommodate growing commuter demand.
Alongside the expansion of train capacity, Maha-Metro plans to upgrade depot facilities at Vanaz and Range Hill.
Meanwhile, extension work is already underway on multiple Metro routes, including the PCMC-Nigdi, Swargate-Katraj, Vanaz-Chandni Chowk, and Ramwadi-Wagholi stretches. Work on the proposed Line 4 corridor connecting Khadakwasla and Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar is also expected to begin soon.
