Pune, 11th April 2026: The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha Metro) has marked a historic milestone for the Pune Metro project, recording a staggering total ridership of 7,08,63,799 for the financial year 2025-26. Cementing its position as the city’s emerging transportation lifeline, the metro network generated a robust total revenue of ₹1,10,97,28,871 during the same period.

During a detailed media presentation on April 10, 2026, Maha Metro authorities showcased the project’s financial triumphs, operational milestones, and an expansive blueprint for Phase 1 extensions and Phase 2 corridors.

Here are the key highlights and updates from the Pune Metro Rail Project:

Shattering Ridership and Revenue Records With the completion of the 33.28 KM Phase-1 network in September 2024, passenger adoption has skyrocketed. Record Revenue: Pune Metro achieved a total revenue of ₹110.97 Crore in FY 2025-26. Daily Averages: The average daily ridership reached an impressive 1,87,299 in March 2026. Authorities anticipate this number to surge to 2,75,000 following the operationalization of Line 3. Historic Milestone: The network achieved a cumulative ridership of 10 Crore passengers in October 2025.

Strengthening First & Last-Mile Connectivity To ensure a seamless commute, Pune Metro has extensively bolstered its last-mile connectivity infrastructure:

Feeder Buses: 11 stations are now equipped with 85 dedicated feeder buses across 23 routes, including 45 specially branded PMPML metro feeder buses. Airport & IT Park Links: Dedicated airport feeder services are currently fully operational from the Ramwadi station. Furthermore, employee e-feeder services are ferrying corporate professionals to key IT parks like Barclays (Kharadi), Magarpatta, and Business Bay.

Auto and E-Scooter Tie-ups: Maha Metro has signed 24 MoUs with various rickshaw unions to provide shared auto services. Additionally, 30 e-scooters have been launched from Anand Nagar Station targeting MIT students.

Phase 1 Extensions: Work in Full Swing 1. PCMC to Nigdi (4.4 KM Elevated): Built at a cost of ₹960.18 Crore, this 4-station stretch has already achieved 40.04% physical progress. Viaduct and station track work is advancing rapidly. Notably, the state government approved a proposal for an additional 4th station on March 10, 2026. All necessary land for the viaduct is in possession.

2. Swargate to Katraj (5.46 KM Underground): Costing ₹2,954.53 Crore, this critical 5-station underground extension has achieved 5.09% physical progress. Tunneling contracts have been awarded, and launching shaft work is currently underway. Topographical and geotechnical surveys are progressing simultaneously.

Phase 2 Corridors: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk & Ramwadi to Wagholi The much-anticipated Line 2A and 2B (12.75 KM with 13 stations at a cost of ₹3,626.24 Crore) is gaining momentum. Topographical surveys are complete, and detailed design consultancies (DDC) have been awarded for all 13 elevated stations.

On March 9, 2026, the contract for viaduct and station work for Line 2A (Vanaz to Chandani Chowk) was officially awarded.

Land Acquisition Insights: As per official documents, the land requirements for Line 2A & 2B are thoroughly mapped out, requiring 2,880.95 sq.mtr. of private land and 5,510.11 sq.mtr. of PMC/Government land across areas like Vimannagar, Kharadi, Wagholi, and Chandani Chowk.

Line 4: Kharadi to Khadakwasla (with Spur Line 4A to Warje) This massive 31.64 KM stretch featuring 28 stations is budgeted at ₹9,857.85 Crore. Tenders for civil works are planned in two packages, with the first currently undergoing ADB vetting.

Land Acquisition for Spur Lines: Spur Line 4A (Karve Putala to Daulat Nagar): Requires 915.38 sq.mtr. of private land and 1,820.73 sq.mtr. of government land. Spur Line 4 (Dalvewadi to Khadakwasla): Requires 83.58 sq.mtr. of private land and 2,559.82 sq.mtr. of government land.

Interestingly, there is an 11.6 KM overlap between the Metro alignment and the proposed Pune-Shirur flyover (MSIDC). The Chief Minister has directed Maha Metro to execute the common section for the first 5 KM.

Looking Ahead: Upcoming DPRs The vision for Pune’s transit future is rapidly expanding. Several Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are currently under finalization or approval:

Hadapsar to Loni Kalbhor (11.10 KM): ₹5,704 Crore project approved by the GoM and forwarded to the Central Government. Bhakti Shakti to Chakan via Nashik Phata (45.29 KM): A revised ₹12,937 Crore DPR was submitted to the PCMC in February 2026. Airport Connectivity (3 KM) & District Court to Yewalewadi (20 KM): DPRs and alignment finalizations are actively under preparation.
