Pune Metro's Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Line Faces Further Delays

The completion timeline for the Hinjewadi Shivajinagar Metro corridor in Pune has been deferred once again in the past week, with Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL) citing ongoing construction constraints, land-related issues, and coordination challenges as key reasons for the delay in delivering one of the city's critical transit projects.

The corridor, spanning approximately 23 km, is designed to connect Shivajinagar in central Pune with the Hinjewadi IT hub, one of the region's largest employment centres. Envisaged as an elevated Metro line, the project is expected to play a significant role in easing traffic congestion along the heavily used Pune Mumbai highway stretch and surrounding arterial roads.

Officials associated with the project indicated that multiple factors have contributed to the revised timeline. These include delays in land acquisition at select locations, the need for shifting underground and overhead utilities, and execution complexities in densely built-up areas. The alignment passes through high-traffic zones, requiring phased construction and traffic management measures, which have slowed progress.

The project is being implemented under a public-private partnership model, with Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited (TRIL) involved as a key private sector participant. The hybrid structure has required coordination between state agencies, private developers, and contractors, adding layers of operational complexity. Authorities noted that synchronising these stakeholders while maintaining construction schedules has posed challenges.

Construction activity is currently underway across multiple stretches, with work on piers, viaducts, and stations progressing in phases. However, bottlenecks in specific sections have impacted overall timelines, leading to the latest postponement. The revised schedule is expected to push completion beyond earlier targets, although officials have not indicated a definitive new deadline.

The Hinjewadi Shivajinagar corridor is considered a critical infrastructure link for Pune's western growth corridor, which has witnessed rapid expansion driven by the IT and services sectors. Hinjewadi, in particular, houses several large technology parks and corporate campuses, generating substantial daily commuter traffic.

Delays in the project have implications for both mobility and real estate development in the region. Improved connectivity through Metro infrastructure is often a key driver for residential and commercial growth, particularly in peripheral and high-density employment zones. The continued deferment may affect timelines for transit-oriented development and planned investments along the corridor.

Authorities have indicated that efforts are being made to expedite construction by resolving pending issues and enhancing coordination among stakeholders. However, the recurring delays highlight broader execution challenges faced by large urban infrastructure projects, particularly those involving complex alignments and multi-agency involvement.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to provide a direct and efficient transit option between central Pune and Hinjewadi, reducing travel time and improving connectivity across key residential and commercial zones.
