Pune Metro: 12 Stations on Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Route to Open by May 2026

Pune, 20th March 2026: Work on the much-awaited Maan–Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 has reached its final stage, with authorities targeting the opening of the first phase with 12 stations for commuters by May 2026. The metro corridor, which connects the IT hub of Hinjawadi with central Pune, is expected to significantly reduce travel time and traffic congestion once operational.

The 23.2-km-long metro route is being implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model and is considered the country’s first metro project developed under such a framework. This innovative approach has allowed for streamlined project management and efficient resource allocation.

PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary recently conducted an on-ground inspection of the entire corridor to review the progress of the project. Instead of relying solely on reports, he visited the route to assess the quality of work and identify technical issues, directing contractors to accelerate pending tasks.

Officials said that around 94.20 percent of the project work has already been completed. Technical testing of the signalling system and safety inspections by RDSO and CMRS have also been completed, paving the way for operational readiness in the coming months.

Once operational, the metro is expected to drastically cut travel time between Shivajinagar and Hinjawadi, a stretch currently known for heavy traffic due to the large concentration of IT companies and daily commuters. The reduced travel time will not only benefit the local population but also attract more businesses and investments to the region.

“Our target is to complete the first phase with 12 stations by May 2026. Accordingly, we have conducted physical inspections of all stations and instructed contractors to speed up the remaining work. PMRDA will provide all necessary support for the project,” said Dr Chaudhari.

The Metro Line 3 project is expected to bring major relief to Pune residents who face daily traffic congestion on the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar corridor, particularly IT professionals commuting to and from the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park. The opening of this metro line is a significant step towards improving the quality of life for residents and enhancing the city's infrastructure.
