Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for heightened safety measures at approximately 500 identified vulnerable spots in Pune district during the monsoon season. These measures include deploying police or relying on local villagers to prevent mishaps in such areas.
The risks include slippery trails, swollen rivers, unpredictable weather conditions, landslides, and falling rocks. Trails in the Sahyadris become especially dangerous due to rainfall, dense fog, and overgrown grass leading to disorientation.
Lesser-known spots like Kund Mala, Khadakwasla, and Tamhini Ghat are becoming more popular due to social media posts showcasing their picturesque locations. However, these areas often lack adequate administrative oversight, leading to overcrowding and heightened risk of accidents.
Public awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement of safety regulations, and timely maintenance of infrastructure are crucial to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of tourists during the monsoon season.
