Pune Municipal Corporation Struggles with Bounced Property Tax Cheques
Real Estate Pune:Pune, 25th July 2025: Nearly 1,530 cheques submitted by citizens to pay their property tax bills to the Pune Municipal Corporation have bounced, resulting in ₹14 crore in unpaid dues.

Despite multiple payment options, including cash, online transfers, cheques, or RTGS, many taxpayers still prefer submitting cheques for large amounts. However, these bounced cheques, due to insufficient funds in the issuers’ bank accounts, have triggered penalty notices from the municipal authority.

In total, the undeposited cheques amounted to ₹29.30 crore, spanning the current fiscal year (2025-26). Notices and SMS alerts were issued to all concerned taxpayers. Following this, 882 individuals cleared their dues along with penalties, collectively paying ₹15.28 crore.

Despite the follow-ups, 648 taxpayers have yet to settle their dues, remaining in default even after receiving notices and messages.

According to Avinash Sapkal, Deputy Commissioner of the Property Tax Assessment and Collection Department, “The cheques issued by these property owners were returned unpaid by the banks. Notices were sent to them, and they were also informed via SMS. We are now recovering the base tax amount, a penalty for cheque bounce, and interest for delayed payment from these individuals.”

“The Municipal Corporation’s Property Tax Department had a target of ₹3,250 crore in revenue for the year, and has already achieved ₹1,500 crore within 2.5 months,” he said.
