Pune on High Alert as Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases Reach 127
Real Estate Pune:A day after surpassing the 100-case mark, the number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune district has climbed to 127, with two reported fatalities.
The surge has raised significant concerns among residents and health officials, leading to urgent measures, including the reservation of hospital beds and increased public awareness on preventive steps.

Of the total cases, 23 patients are from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas, 73 from the newly merged villages under PMC, 13 from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 9 from Pune Rural, and 9 from other districts.
Out of these, 20 people are on ventilators, and two deaths have been reported.

Health experts are warning that symptoms such as tingling, weakness of hand-grip, and foot drop could signal Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
These symptoms often start in the legs and can spread to the arms and face, leading to paralysis in severe cases.
Approximately one-third of people with GBS experience chest muscle weakness, making it difficult to breathe.

The Centre has deployed a seven-member team of experts in Maharashtra to assist the state in monitoring and managing the increasing cases of GBS.
The team is working closely with local health authorities to enhance surveillance and provide medical support.

Common symptoms of GBS include sudden weakness or paralysis in the hands or legs, trouble walking, and prolonged diarrhea.
Authorities have increased surveillance in affected areas to identify and treat cases early.
To prevent further infections, citizens are advised to ensure good water quality by drinking boiled water, eating fresh and clean food, and avoiding the mixing of cooked and uncooked items.

GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, often triggered by bacterial or viral infections that weaken the immune system.
While it is prevalent in both pediatric and young age groups, doctors assure that GBS will not lead to an epidemic or pandemic, and most patients will recover fully with treatment.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), GBS symptoms can vary but typically include - Weakness or tingling sensations, often starting in the legs and spreading to the arms and face.- For some, these symptoms can lead to paralysis of the legs, arms, or facial muscles.- In one-third of cases, chest muscles are affected, making it hard to breathe.- Severe cases can impact the ability to speak and swallow, necessitating treatment in intensive care units.

The Pune Municipal Corporation is taking proactive steps to raise awareness and provide necessary medical support to affected individuals.
The community is urged to remain vigilant and follow health guidelines to prevent the spread of this rare but serious condition.
