The water discharge rate from the Khadakwasla dam reached 19,334 cusecs by Tuesday afternoon and is expected to increase further to over 25,000 cusecs by evening.
A flood alert was issued in Pune due to heavy rainfall in the district’s catchment areas, leading to a sharp rise in water levels across reservoirs and the controlled release of water from the Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha River.
The main reservoirs feeding Pune city's water supply and flood management are Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon, and Temghar.
Coordinated measures are in place between civic authorities, emergency response teams, and irrigation engineers. Continuous monitoring of inflows is underway, and precautionary measures are being enforced to reduce the risk of flooding.
Long-term plans include integrating sustainable urban designs, eco-friendly infrastructure, and floodplain management to mitigate future risks. The emphasis is shifting from emergency response to long-term resilience planning.
