Pune: PMC Unveils Plans for Bird Park and Facility Upgrades at Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park
Real Estate Pune:Katraj, 24th September 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to develop a bird park within the premises of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Katraj, along with upgrades to improve visitor facilities.

“A committee of civic officials recently inspected the zoo to assess the current infrastructure. While the area is spacious, the number of animals is relatively low. We can accommodate more species and enhance visitor facilities, including parking and other services,” said Naval Kishore Ram, PMC Commissioner.

Currently, the zoo has two sanctioned curator posts, which have remained vacant for nearly a decade. On addressing manpower shortages, Ram said, “We will take steps to fill the pending positions. The zoo needs more veterinary doctors as well as experts to monitor food quality and contamination. A curator plays a vital role in supervising animal keepers, garden staff, and other personnel.”

The move comes after 16 spotted deer died at the zoo between July 7 and 12, prompting concern from authorities. In August, tests on the deer’s blood samples revealed the presence of malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in one of the samples — a case believed to be the first of its kind in India involving wildlife. The issue was raised in the Maharashtra Assembly by Kasba Peth MLA Hemant Rasane, who demanded an inquiry.

Commenting on the incident, Ram said, “We have issued instructions to inspect all potential sources of contamination, including water and food. Corrective measures, such as purifying water in lakes and ponds housing crocodiles, are being implemented to prevent future incidents.”

With these initiatives, PMC aims to enhance both animal welfare and visitor experience, making Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park a more attractive and safe destination for Pune residents.
