Pune Police Crack Down on Firearm Licence Holders: 150 Notified for Violations
Real Estate Pune:The Pune police have taken a strict stance against firearm licence holders who have violated the terms and conditions of their licences. In a recent move, the police have issued notices to 150 such licence holders, seeking an explanation for their actions.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) Arvind Chawria, the licence holders have been given 10 to 15 days to respond to the notices. If they fail to provide valid reasons within the timeframe, their licences will be cancelled. So far, only around 10 licence holders have filed their replies.

The notices were issued after the police found that some licence holders had been involved in criminal cases after securing their licences. Others had failed to renew their licences or had not purchased the firearm mentioned in their licence.

One such example of misuse of firearms was the incident at Vishrantwadi on August 12, where a security guard from Sinhagad Road allegedly carried his licensed air gun in public and threatened people. The police registered an FIR under section 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Arms Act against the guard and his two employers.

In another incident, a real estate developer (31) shot himself dead using his licensed pistol in his office at Narhe on June 9.

The police action comes after the cancellation of the firearm licence of Manorama, the mother of probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar. The licence was cancelled by City Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar in the first week of August after Pune Rural police registered a case of rioting, threatening, and Arms Act violation against her and six others.

The police are taking these measures to ensure that firearm licences are not misused and that public safety is maintained.

In a related development, the UK has suspended 30 out of its 350 arms export licences to Israel due to concerns that these arms could be used in serious violations of international humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, AU Small Finance Bank has applied for approval from the Reserve Bank of India to transition from a small finance bank to a universal bank. The board approved this application in July 2024.
