The railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has directed the construction of permanent passenger holding areas at 76 stations before the next festive season.
The stations included in the directive are Pune, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Nagpur, Nashik Road, and Dadar.
The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has been entrusted with the task of building the permanent holding areas.
The Pune railway station currently occupies approximately 22 acres, and the redevelopment plan proposes to increase this to 36 acres.
A permanent holding area is necessary to manage the high volume of passengers during peak travel times, such as the festive season, and to ensure a smoother travel experience.
