PMPML is requesting dedicated land for bus depots to address the operational challenges arising from the rapid expansion of its bus fleet. Without sufficient depot and parking facilities, service efficiency and commuter convenience could be compromised.
PMPML plans to expand its bus fleet by adding around 2,400 more buses over the coming years. In the first phase, 1,000 new CNG buses and 300 electric buses will be inducted, aligning with India’s commitment to sustainable and low-emission urban transport.
Many plots earmarked for bus depots in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad remain underutilised, diverted for other purposes, or encroached upon. Timely allocation of these plots is critical to establishing functional depots equipped with necessary facilities.
Modern bus depots equipped with fuelling stations, electric bus charging points, and maintenance facilities will reduce operational inefficiencies, improve service quality, and support the city’s green mobility agenda.
This initiative highlights the importance of strategic infrastructure planning in rapidly growing cities. By ensuring efficient and sustainable public transport, Pune can set a model for other urban areas in reducing congestion, pollution, and ensuring equitable access.
