Pune to Ease Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway Traffic with 15.87 Km Elevated Corridor

Hinjawadi, 25th March 2026: In a significant step to ease chronic traffic congestion on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway passing through Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Central and Maharashtra governments have proposed a major infrastructure project.

A six-lane elevated corridor of about 15.87 kilometres has been planned from Dehu Road to Sutarwadi, connecting to the Navale Bridge stretch. The project is expected to provide major relief to commuters in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Hinjawadi IT Park area, and nearby suburbs, said MLA Shankar Jagtap.

The issue was raised in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday during the ongoing Budget Session, where a question was asked about the current situation at the Navale Bridge, a major traffic bottleneck in Pune. During the discussion, MLA Shankar Jagtap sought details regarding the proposed elevated corridor connecting Navale Bridge, Sutarwadi, and Dehu Road. Responding to the query, Minister of State Yogesh Kadam shared details of the proposed project.

According to Jagtap, several measures are being undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to improve connectivity between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Land acquisition for the Dehu Road–Sutarwadi stretch, along with the widening and asphalting of service roads, will be prioritised as part of the project.

The proposed elevated corridor will be developed on the lines of the eight-lane elevated road between Nashik Phata and Khed. Once completed, the project is expected to play a key role in reducing traffic congestion on the busy Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway passing through Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Major boost for Hinjawadi IT hub

Traffic congestion in and around Hinjawadi IT Park has been worsening with the rapid growth of IT companies and residential areas. The proposed elevated corridor is expected to significantly improve travel time and connectivity for commuters travelling through Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale and Ravet in Pimpri-Chinchwad, as well as Balewadi, Baner, Sus and Bavdhan in Pune.

Residents of nearby areas such as Maan, Marunji, Nere, Jambe, Kasarsai and Kiwale are also expected to benefit from the improved road infrastructure, Jagtap said.

Push for better connectivity

Traffic congestion in Pimpri-Chinchwad and the Hinjawadi IT Park region has become increasingly severe in recent years. The proposed 15.87-kilometre elevated corridor between Dehu Road and Sutarwadi is seen as a crucial long-term solution. Apart from reducing travel time, the project is expected to significantly strengthen regional connectivity.

Jagtap said the government should expedite the project by prioritising land acquisition and resolving issues related to service roads. He added that the widening of service roads and construction of the flyover would help create a more robust traffic management system for the future and that efforts would continue to ensure the project is implemented at the earliest.
