The new museum will be developed on a six-acre site in Bavdhan Budruk, Pune.
The expansion project is being led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and an administrative committee will be set up to oversee the development.
The new museum complex will be named 'Museum City' and will retain the name of Raja Dinkar Kelkar.
Currently, only about 11% of the museum's collection is on public display due to space constraints.
