Pune's Water Stock in Four Dams Higher Than Last Year, Supply Adequate Till July
Pune, 2nd April 2026: Water levels in the four reservoirs supplying the city — Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar — are currently higher than last year, offering some relief ahead of the peak summer months. Officials said the combined storage stands at around 14 TMC, which is about 1.2 TMC more than the 12.9 TMC recorded on April 1 last year.
Despite the improved position, authorities have urged caution. Civic officials said that Pune will require nearly 7 to 8 TMC of water to meet demand until the end of July, making careful management essential.
Irrigation department officials have planned weekly reviews to continuously assess storage and plan releases accordingly. As per the existing schedule, water will continue to be released for agricultural needs until the end of May. While the initial phase will support summer crops, subsequent releases will prioritize drinking water requirements in rural areas. Officials clarified that Pune’s urban supply is expected to remain uninterrupted for now.
The four dams have a total capacity of 29.15 TMC and had reached full storage at the end of the last monsoon. While this year’s reserves are slightly higher, officials warned against excessive usage, particularly in view of potential weather uncertainties such as the impact of El Niño.
Civic authorities said no water cuts are planned this summer. Measures are being taken to curb wastage and improve distribution, including commissioning new overhead tanks and strengthening supply networks in select areas. On average, Pune consumes around 1.5 TMC of water each month, officials said, adding that efficient use will be key in the coming months.
