The Sukoon Empire project is a real estate development marketed as a 'Halal lifestyle township' located in Karjat, Thane district, around 100 kilometres from Mumbai. It is being developed by Sukoon Homes Builders and Developers.
Sukoon Empire promises 'authentic community living' and a 'safe Halal environment' for families, with dedicated prayer areas, communal spaces, and facilities designed to preserve cultural and religious values.
The project became controversial after a promotional video went viral on social media, featuring a woman in a hijab speaking about raising children in a Halal environment. The video drew mixed reactions, with some accusing it of promoting religious segregation.
Political leaders from the BJP and Shiv Sena demanded strict legal action against the developers, alleging the project promotes 'land jihad' and threatens social harmony. The NHRC and NCPCR also raised concerns and issued notices to the government.
The Maharashtra government has been directed by the NHRC to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks. The project is currently under scrutiny and facing legal and political pressure.
