Thane's Majiwada-Manpada Ward Leads in Water Bill Recovery at Rs 1.1 Crore
Thane: The Majiwada-Manpada ward of the Thane Municipal Corporation has made significant strides in recovering pending water bills, collecting a staggering Rs 1.1 crore, as revealed by civic records shared on Friday. This accomplishment comes amidst one of the worst water scarcity issues the ward has faced, with several high-end complexes being forced to pay large sums monthly for tanker services.
A civic official stated that the department had initiated a strict week-long special drive, which resulted in the recovery of pending water arrears worth Rs 4.2 crore between February 27 and March 5. The drive was a concerted effort to address the mounting arrears and ensure that residents and commercial establishments comply with their payment obligations.
According to the municipal data, other notable wards in terms of recovery include Kalwa, which collected Rs 59 lakh, Naupada with Rs 52.9 lakh, Vartak Nagar at Rs 49.9 lakh, and Uthalsar with Rs 36.6 lakh. The Lokmanya–Savarkar Nagar ward committee managed to recover Rs 31.3 lakh, while Wagle Estate contributed Rs 25.1 lakh, Diva at Rs 23.6 lakh, and Mumbra at Rs 16.6 lakh.
The success of the drive was attributed to the strict measures taken by civic officials. Commissioner Saurabh Rao mentioned that during the drive, 103 water connections were disconnected, 177 notices were issued, pumps were seized, and a pump room was sealed. These actions were part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure that all entities, whether residential or commercial, adhere to their water bill payment responsibilities.
The water scarcity in Majiwada-Manpada has been a pressing issue, with many residents and complexes relying heavily on tanker services to meet their daily water needs. The high cost of these services has added to the financial burden of the community, making the recovery of pending bills even more critical.
The Thane Municipal Corporation has been proactive in addressing the water supply challenges in the city. Efforts to improve the infrastructure and ensure a more reliable water supply are ongoing. However, the immediate focus remains on ensuring that all residents and establishments are up-to-date with their water bill payments.
The success of the Majiwada-Manpada ward in recovering such a significant amount of pending bills serves as a model for other wards in the city. It highlights the effectiveness of strict enforcement and the importance of community cooperation in addressing critical issues like water scarcity and financial compliance.
The Thane Municipal Corporation continues to work towards a more sustainable and equitable water management system, ensuring that all residents have access to a reliable and affordable water supply. The recent drive and the subsequent collections are a step in the right direction, fostering a sense of responsibility and accountability among the community members.
As the city moves forward, the focus will remain on maintaining these efforts and ensuring that the gains made during the special drive are sustained over time. The Thane Municipal Corporation is committed to providing a better quality of life for its residents, and the recovery of pending water bills is a crucial part of this mission.
